Xeriscape Design Ideas

Clearly labeled conceptual directions for a complete Scottsdale xeriscape, with notes on the design decisions behind each one. Not client work.

Concept directions

Filter by part of the landscape

  • A front yard composed around structural agave and a clear path to the door.
Design notes about A front yard composed around structural agave and a clear path to the door.

Circulation first: the walkway sets the line, and planting is arranged to frame the approach rather than crowd it.

  • An entry direction that takes its lines from the architecture.
Design notes about An entry direction that takes its lines from the architecture.

Material color is matched to the house so the landscape reads as part of the building, not as a layer added in front of it.

  • A courtyard entry direction that layers low planting around a single vertical accent.

The ocotillo carries the focal height while the wall and wide path compress the arrival sequence into a clear threshold.

  • A sculptural planting direction built on form and repetition.
Design notes about A sculptural planting direction built on form and repetition.

Plants are spaced for mature size, so the composition opens up as it grows instead of needing to be thinned.

  • Texture contrast between planting and ground material.
Design notes about Texture contrast between planting and ground material.

Close range is where a xeriscape is judged: leaf texture against stone is what stops the ground plane reading as empty.

  • A planting direction that adds seasonal color around structural forms.
Design notes about A planting direction that adds seasonal color around structural forms.

Flowering masses repeat at low height while agave and desert spoon hold the composition when blooms cycle off.

  • A dry creek direction that gives the ground plane movement.
Design notes about A dry creek direction that gives the ground plane movement.

Boulders set scale and the channel gives runoff somewhere to go — the feature does a drainage job as well as a visual one.

  • A material direction where boulders anchor the turn of a planting bed.
Design notes about A material direction where boulders anchor the turn of a planting bed.

Graduated sizes set into the grade give the bed a visual anchor at its widest curve, so the edge reads as intentional rather than as a line drawn around a shape.

  • A material direction built on a crisp transition between two aggregate fields.
Design notes about A material direction built on a crisp transition between two aggregate fields.

One continuous steel edge contains the contrast; particle size and tone define circulation versus planting.

  • A diagram of how drip zones are planned around the planting.
Design notes about A diagram of how drip zones are planned around the planting.

Plants with similar water needs share a zone, so each zone can be run on its own schedule instead of watering the whole yard to suit its thirstiest plant.

  • A finished-bed irrigation direction that reveals the concealed system beneath the gravel.
Design notes about A finished-bed irrigation direction that reveals the concealed system beneath the gravel.

The cutaway separates surface finish from system logic: a buried lateral feeds a serviceable emitter at grade, while the wetting bulb shows how water spreads through the root zone.

  • A root-zone watering direction shown before gravel is returned.
Design notes about A root-zone watering direction shown before gravel is returned.

The emitter sits outside the crown with a small localized wet area, illustrating targeted delivery without spray.

  • A backyard direction where paving supports the planting design.
Design notes about A backyard direction where paving supports the planting design.

Supporting hardscape stays subordinate: it defines a use area inside the landscape rather than becoming the landscape.

  • A backyard direction organized as a walk-through desert garden.
Design notes about A backyard direction organized as a walk-through desert garden.

The curved path creates depth and multiple planting views; boulders anchor turns so the garden reads as a sequence rather than a flat bed.

  • A shade-led backyard direction with dappled light over desert planting.
Design notes about A shade-led backyard direction with dappled light over desert planting.

Tree canopy is part of the plan: two shade anchors soften the ground plane while desert understory occupies filtered light, leaving usable open space beneath.

These are directions, not a catalog of finished yards

Each concept isolates one decision — how a path sets the approach, how boulders anchor a curve, how drip is zoned — so it can be looked at on its own. No property is designed one bed at a time.

On a complete conversion the front and the back are planned together: the same material palette, the same plant vocabulary, and the same reading of sun, shade and drainage carried across the whole property, so it resolves as one design rather than two projects that met at the side gate.
